Stringed Instruments
The charango: a small, fretted instrument from Bolivia, with 10 nylon strings The charangón: a slightly larger version of the charango, with metal strings. The requinto: a small Mexican guitar, tuned in A. The tiplé: a Colombian instrument with 12 metal strings in four groups of 3, tuned like the top 4 strings of the guitar.
Wind Instruments
The quena: an end-blown wooden flute. The quenacho: a larger end-blown wooden flute, played across the Andes. The sikus: panpipes of various sizes and pitches, containing one, two or three rows of pipes. Each size and style of pipes has its own name in the indigenous languages of the Andes - Quechua and Aymara High Low
Percussion Instruments
The bombo: a llama skin drum played in many Andean countries, and also in Argentina. The palitos: rhythm sticks, played mainly in Central America. Return to top of page
