Original Compositions & Arrangements of Traditional Pieces
|
We are able to offer an introduction to the music and culture of the Andes for both primary and secondary school students. We have developed a format for a 35-45 minute class, which involves participation by the children and short performances of 3 pieces of music by ourselves. This format can be used to run a workshop for the whole school, catering for classes of up to 70, over the course of a normal school day. We have also run short final presentations for the whole school at the end of the day.
On this page you will find:
details of the basic session

The basic 35-45 minute session comprises:
The playing of an introductory instrumental piece by us (guitar and panpipes).
A short introduction to Latin America -- its location, language and musical traditions.
Involving the children singing "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" in a particular way, dividing the words of the song between two groups of children
The playing of a traditional Andean instrumental piece by us using guitar, panpipes and drum -- a piece which starts slowly and quietly, then builds up both speed and volume
Playing to the children a very simple panpipe and drum piece, which only uses 5 notes
Getting the children to form 5 lines and giving each child a hollow plastic tube, tuned to one of the five notes, and teaching them how to blow across the top of it and stop the bottom end with one finger
Teaching the children to play the 5 note piece, by effectively forming a giant set of panpipes, starting slowly and then building up speed
