WORKSHOPS for SCHOOLS

We are able to offer an introduction to the music and culture of the Andes for both primary and secondary school students. We have developed a format for a 35-45 minute class, which involves participation by the children and short performances of 3 pieces of music by ourselves. This format can be used to run a workshop for the whole school, catering for classes of up to 70, over the course of a normal school day. We have also run short final presentations for the whole school at the end of the day.

An Outline of the Session

The basic 35-45 minute session comprises:

  • The playing of an introductory instrumental piece by us (guitar and panpipes).

  • A short introduction to Latin America -- its location, language and musical traditions.

  • Involving the children singing "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" in a particular way, dividing the words of the song between two groups of children

  • The playing of a traditional Andean instrumental piece by us using guitar, panpipes and drum -- a piece which starts slowly and quietly, then builds up both speed and volume

  • Playing to the children a very simple panpipe and drum piece, which only uses 5 notes

  • Getting the children to form 5 lines and giving each child a hollow plastic tube, tuned to one of the five notes, and teaching them how to blow across the top of it and stop the bottom end with one finger

  • Teaching the children to play the 5 note piece, by effectively forming a giant set of panpipes, starting slowly and then building up speed
